Part 1 · Know Your AI Readiness
Tools · Using AI Tools and Agents
The Data lessons had you sorting, checking, and pulling answers from your own spreadsheets. Picture two people with the same chatbot. One asks a question and copies the reply. The other briefs it once and returns to a finished, three-source draft. Same tool. Very different reach.
Two ways to work with AI
There are two ways to work with AI, and telling them apart is most of this dimension. A tool answers one turn at a time. You ask, it replies, you ask again (a chatbot, a writing assistant, an image generator), with you in the loop on every step.
An agent works differently. You give it a goal and clear instructions, and it runs several steps on its own (searching, drafting, checking, revising), then hands the result back. You launch it and collect the result when the task is done. Treat it as a bounded task you start, not a colleague you manage. It has no role and no judgement of its own, so you govern it like a tool.
| AI tool | AI agent |
|---|---|
| One turn at a time Ask, answer, ask again | Briefed once A goal plus clear instructions |
| You stay in the loop Every step is yours | Runs the steps itself Search, draft, check, revise |
| Operated live Chatbot, writing assistant, image generator | Launched and collected A bounded task you start and stop |
Where "AI Ready" sits
The AI-Ready bar on this dimension is more ordinary than it sounds. It means one of two things: you use several AI tools regularly and can point to how they change your output, or you can hand a multi-step task to an agent with instructions clear enough that it finishes the job. The more steps you delegate, the more your brief at the start and your check at the end carry the weight. The agent runs fast; it cannot tell whether the answer is right. That call stays yours.
Key Takeaway
An agent runs the steps fast; whether the answer is right stays your call.
Check your understanding
Self-check only. Nothing is scored and nothing is recorded; open an answer to compare it with your own.
What is the core difference between an AI tool and an AI agent?
- There is no difference, they are two names for a chatbot.
- A tool responds to each instruction you give; an agent takes a goal and works through the multiple steps on its own, then reports back.
- An agent is just an older, less capable version of a tool.
- Tools are for text and agents are only for images.

Two people describe their AI tool use. Which one is AI Ready (L2) on this dimension?
- "I opened a chatbot once last year and asked it a couple of questions."
- "I use a few AI tools most weeks for real work, and I have handed an agent a multi-step task with clear instructions and let it run."
- "I have read a lot about AI agents but never actually used one."
- "I wait for IT to set everything up before I touch any AI tool."
